I can tell that Tawn really knows cooperative learning. I've read a lot about coop. learning, but have never really tried it in its truest sense. The questions I have for Tawn are as follows:
Do you use coop. learning with writing activities and if so, how?
How often do you use coop. learning activities in a grading period?

It was a great demo.

There is a real difference between cooperative learning and group work, isn't there? My experiences with group work have not been nearly as productive as Tawn's system seems to be. I would like to know more about cooperative learning with writing activities. This might even be helpful when teaching revision and later copy-editing. I can see dividing up the responsibility for looking for a certain aspect of text. One student looks at voice, one looks at clarity, one looks at the ideas and the support for those ideas. I don't know, it's off the top of my head, but there are some great ideas here.

Tawn did a wonderful job on her teaching demo today. I also use cooperative learning techniques but was very interested in hearing her ideas and ways to implement the program. I especially liked the way she grouped the class and then used those groups to regroup.
Cooperative learning can be used as a great tool in the classroom. I agree with Tawn when she said that it is not ok to use it in every situation. I also think there is a time and a place for independence and independent thinking so that students do not become to comfortable, thinking that they will always be able to rely on others. Cooperative learning is great for boosting the confidence of identified kids as they feel equal and with the different roles, they feel important. THanks Tawn for a great job!

Tawn I loved the idea of using the folders and having the students write on each finger something personal. I think this would be a great way to get to know the students right away. I like to make some connection with them as soon as possible. I use cooperative groups a lot. I do have the students each have a role. My students love to work in groups.

Tawn

You did a wonderful job of exhibiting how cooperative learning can be utilized in the classroom for any age for that matter. You have a strong understanding like Susan said. I bet you really engage your students in activities with the approaches you showed us today! I am very much interested in cooperative learning and try to implement the best I can for the younger students, but I am also doing my inquiry paper on how does cooperative learning help young children with writing. If you have any input for me, please let me know! Great Job Today:))))

Tawn's teaching demo was incredible. I wish that I could have had her as a teacher when I was in school. She has a great way of making you feel comfortable and asking you to work at the same time. I wrote today in my reflection that I am going to try to figure out how I can adapt this to my class. Again very good job Tawn!

Tawn's lesson today was excellent, and I loved her comment about ownership. The various activities she had us complete really does create ownership. When students have this feeling of ownership, they work harder. Everyone in the group had a job and was accountable. I loved how you started with one group, moved to a new group, and then ended up with the original group. Students brought back with them what they learned and was responsible for making sure their original group learned the information. I will use this technique in my classes, including the grading activity. Great job!!!

What a great job Tawn did with her teaching demo. There are many applicable things I want to try with my students. I really liked the use of dice to decide what their grade would be. Working in groups is always fun - even for adults. Super!

I've been really excited about Tawn as a person and teacher, ever since we interviewed together, so i knew today's presentation would be excellent.

It was sooo rich. Not the guy Rich, no, rich with ideas we can use in the classrooms.

What amazing teachers we have in one room.

Whoever put this thing together, knows a thing or two...

That was a great job today. I loved the things she showed us about the story elements. I am hoping to find something along the same lines for 1st grade. I really liked all she showed us today, I am looking forward to using it this next year. I agree there is a big difference between cooperative learning and group work and she showed that today.

There was so much valuable stuff in Tawn's demonstration. I love the idea of students teaching different course concepts to each other. Despite our best intentions, I think there are times when we as teachers just get in the way. I think it would be fascinating to see how students approached these kinds of tasks with their classmates. I'll bet it teaches you a lot about your students very quickly. I also loved loved loved the "grading scale." I've been trying to think of ways I could adapt that to college classrooms. Fabulous job, Tawn!
