Elbow Comments etc.

The reading today from chapter 1 of Elbow's book was personal and interesting. The discussion we had about the academic vs. personal narrative really challenged my thinking. I don't think anyone ever told me - or gave me permission - to be so personal in an academic writing. I like that option. The writing then is so much more reader-friendly.
Just like Ann's presentation yesterday, Martha's presentation today also gave me lots of ideas for projects for different stories that we read in the sixth grade. (We don't have art at our school either, so any art they get will be in our classrooms.) The giving of choices is empowering for students.
I'm loving all the discussion times as well as reflective writing times we are afforded in this class! I think I can do this!

This was a great reading, and I completely agree with the two presentations. Todays presentation was great too as well as the food.

I love the discussion times as well and really like this class.

I was also amazed by the discussion yesterday on the first Chapter in the Elbow Book. In the beginning, I felt confused because I had never thought of focusing writing on academic vs. personal narrative. It was definitely a higher level of thinking, which is good because we are constantly trying to providing our students with higher level thinking. This definitely challenged me yesterday! I agree is makes it much more reader-friendly.

The presentations from all 3 days have provided me with very unique ways to utilize their ideas in my classroom for my grade level students. I firmly believe that children should be provided with choices.

I believe that this class is providing me with so much beneficial information to be able to take back to my classroom, school and colleagues for the upcoming years.

Writers and teachers need to be willing to put their humanity out there. Nick Lowe wrote a great song covered by Elvis Costello called "What's so funny about peace, love, and understanding?"

Yeah, what's so funny about the idea that we need to respect human dignity?

I'm really glad you folks are here. Maybe I am a hippie after all.
