Synonyms and Antonyms

One of the things that I have struggled with in the past two years is effective strategies for teaching vocabulary. In fact, it's the topic for my inquiry. I loved Carly's lesson today. What a great way of 1) getting the students up and moving in English class, something else I want to do, but often have trouble coming up with new ways to do so, and 2) engaging students in learning vocabulary. My students don't memorize vocabulary words for more than a week, if that, and extensive reading isn't practical as a focused lesson. I like this method, I will use it in my own classroom and I am looking forward to finding more strategies like it. :-) Thanks!

I totally agree with Ann. I really think this would be a great way to reinforce vocabulary in my Spanish class. This would be an awsome way to review before a vocab quiz, or test.

Thanks, Ann. One thing that you may want to try is saving all of the cards and just keep adding new vocab words. My students know that they need to retain the learned definitions because it comes back to haunt them every game (did I mention that they love to win?)

Carly's lesson had great practical application. I also struggle with vocabulary "lessons." My students do not make the connection between writing and the development of a strong vocabulary. The fact that Carly moved from the game to the writing activity would definitely show students why they are learning the lesson. I think we should always strive to find practical application for anything we teach.

I thought it was an excellent lesson especially for kinesthetic learners. I am one who would NOT use the competition aspect of it. It's ironic, being a Martial arts person and an athlete all of my life. I've been reared in the "competitive cauldron". Some of my students would freak because they would let the team down in a public way--maybe.
