Today, I would like you folks to blog a comment that would help April and Sue stay in the loop. Write a comment on something that you saw, heard, or thought today that would help them feel like they haven't missed anything too important.
Today we cut our Reflective Essay into pieces. To be more to the point we cut the paper after each paragraph. We then traded our paper with someone and had them put the paper together they thought it should go. I like the activity, it gave me some ideas about how I could write my paper. I could write my paper in reverse chronological order. It really did give some things to think about.
We missed you, Ladies. Tad did an awesome job teaching today. He read beautiful passages from Charlotte's Web and shared letters that he exchanged with his students. We discussed senses and descriptive language. He also sang and played the bongos. Totally Tad, Totally Rad.
Today, Tad did his teaching demo where he showed how he teaches his students using a letter writing format to write a descriptive paragraph. The descriptive paragraph include the students using their five senses to write about a scene from Charlotte's Web. Then they had to write another descriptive paragraph about an event they were involved. He did a great job and he entertained us with a sense provoking song at the end.
First thing this morning, we had to cut apart "our" personal narratives. Then we traded them with someone who we had never shared with before. We were to put them together in the order we thought their narrative would flow or omit things we felt should not be there. Myself, I struggled with this activity because I was wanting and did to put the narrative back in the order it was originally. Yes, I did too. This activity was interesting, but I am still trying to figure a way to utilize it with my class as I have 2nd and 3rd graders. I found myself and others using sequencing or chronological order and this is an area that we focus on strongly in the elementary grades. If you have any ideas, I am open to them! Hope you guys are doing all right! Nancy
Sue and April, We were quite the "cut-ups" today! We cut up our personal essays by paragraphs and traded with someone who had never read any of our drafts yet. The process of putting them together again was really time-consuming but very telling. We kept getting hung up on the idea of "doing it right" and not hurting anyone by our efforts. We discussed this process most of the morning. It did open some doors in my mind, but I think I still have some questions about using this exercise in my class. It would take a lot of preparation and trust building, I think, in my 6th grade class. Hope to see you soon!
April and Sue, today Tad did his demo. It was good. It provided a great way to review letter writing with our students, plus a great way to help our students learn to write a descriptive paragraph. I enjoyed his demo, and the ideas I received from it, as well as all the other demo's. We discussed the River of Earth book.We cut up our reflective essays, exchanged them with another person and put them back together, they way we thought was good for the reader. We talked about our personal essay's, we talked a little bit about our research papers. I guess we just need to write, that is what I got from today, there is really no right or wrong. I am just going to write!!!! Today really helped me, I still have a lot of work to do, but I am feeling better.
This morning we cut up our reflective essays. Sounds like a horrible task, but it turned out to be a lot of fun. I realized that I need to make a few changes to my paper. I think my students will enjoy completing this assignment.
Hey Ladies, We missed you today. It was a day filled with conflicting emotions. We spent the morning, cutting up our essays and then trying to reassemble someone else's life. This was an eye opening experience. THe afternoon was great with Tad sharing an awesome way to share with students. I enjoyed his oral reading of descriptive paragraphs of Charlotte's Web. He was also very entertaining with his musical talents. We also began discussing the Still novel today. That was a great discussion and I enjoyed hearing other's perspectives on the characters and events. Hope to see you both tomorrow.
This note is for you April and Sue, Well ladies, We cut our personal essays today by paragraphs , mixed up the paragraphs and then turned them over to someone in the class who had never read our personal essays. They put them back in the order as they saw fit. This was a very eye opening experience. It allowed you to see your writing in a different order and to think about making revisions. I'll try something new. Tad had a very cool lesson today. We all enjoyed it. Tad is very confident and will do a marvelous job at his new school.
